diptyque and Saint-Louis, the atypical and exceptional
Travel and the memories it creates punctuate diptyque’s history. It was in Italy, from the island of Murano and its unique glassmaking work that the inspiration for the creation of this singular object in the House’s history came. The union of specific expertise in filigree and a contemporary design, created by the young designer FX Balléry, designed an elegantly simple bottle with an apothecary feel. Only the craftspeople from the Cristallerie Saint-Louis, the sole guardians of the technique of filigree crystal, could enhance this desire for perfection. They drew upon the incomparable and extremely ancient art of filigree, which they had reintroduced to France in the 19th century and have practiced since the 1950s solely on “paperweight” objects. With breath and fire, these men of the art have crafted this collector’s object for diptyque.

The birth of a unique bottle
No fewer than seven people and seven different areas of expertise are needed in the manufacturing of a single bottle. It all begins in the hot glass workshop of the Saint-Louis building. The incandescent black crystal is drawn into a long, fine rod that will then be cut into small sections. These are then arranged vertically and in a circle in the filigree mould. Once heated, they bond to the clear crystal, “gathered” at the end of a hollow blowing iron. Everything then happens very quickly. The master glassmaker has an expert eye and hand. He works the material, rolling, pinching and twisting it to create the filigree decoration. With his breath, he then hollows out the molten crystal after pouring it into the mould that will give the bottle its final shape. Following this trial by fire, the bottle is separated from the blowing iron and solidifies almost immediately. As soon as it has cooled, the base of the bottle’s neck is cut with a technique known as “flatting.” The neck will then be bored and then “ground” to make it easier for the thin dauber to be held in place. After it has been carefully examined, the bottle can be numbered and stamped.
