Asia’s largest chef competition is back this year with a bang! Now in its 5th edition, Thailand Ultimate Chef Challenge continues to be the premier competition for the next generation of culinary talents to showcase their skills in a bid for culinary excellence. In this arena, budding chefs get an opportunity to transform ordinary food ingredients into plates of elegance.

New Category

This year, Thailand Ultimate Chef Challenge is introducing a new category – the ‘Bakery & Pastry Challenge’. This new class will cover a wide range of pastries that include creative cakes and desserts. This is in addition to the existing 22 classes such as the signature class ‘Mekong Culinary Challenge’, where a team of three will have a chance to showcase their knowledge, skills and creativity to present the unique culinary cultures and flavours of the Great Mekong River.

World Acclaimed Judges

Judges for the competition include award-winning author and chef, Charles Carroll, President of World Association of Chefs Societies and Chef Willment Leong, Founder Chairman of Thailand Culinary Academy. They are among a panel of 25 internationally acclaimed chefs, including 10 World Association of Chef’s Society (WACS) approved judges from 10 countries. They will critique the aspiring chefs based on a criteria rulebook which includes presentation, innovation, taste and texture, among others.

This year’s interactive Celebrity Coffee Bar presents a rare opportunity for visitors to witness a plethora of coffee talents under one roof. Visitors can get up close and personal with 16 of the world’s best baristas and judges, including three world barista champions like Japan’s Hidenori Izaki, World Barista Champion 2014, Greece’s Stefanos Domatiotis, World Brewers Cup Champion 2014, and George Koustoumpardis, World Coffee in Good Spirits Champion 2015. 11 national baristas and latte art champions and two World Barista Championship judges will also be present at this star-studded event. Visitors will also have an opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and insights from industry insiders from La Marzocco via True Artisan Café where coffee enthusiasts can learn how to operate espresso machines and grinders while connecting with boutique coffee shops and micro-roasters from around the globe. Boncafe Training Sessions will focus on making the best frappes, smoothies and mocktails, all the while educating participants on the industry’s best practices and stringent food standards. To witness the best in creative cuppas, the annual CTI Latte Art Duel returns for another exciting competition to impress a panel of champion baristas.

VIVID CAPTIVATES SYDNEY

The world’s largest festival of lights

With two weeks to go until the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas, Vivid Sydney, illuminates the city, 141 artists from 23 countries are working to create more than 80 light installations and projections that will appear in more than eight Vivid Sydney precincts spread across Sydney.

In 2016, Vivid Sydney will host its longest program ever running for 23 nights from 27 May until 18 June. Last year more than 1.7 million guests attended Vivid Sydney including 112,000 international and domestic visitors. In 2015, Vivid Sydney generated $63.2 million in visitor spend for the NSW economy.

NSW Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Stuart Ayres said, “With less than a month to go until Vivid Sydney begins, our city is gearing up for this year’s festival which will once again shine a light on Sydney as a hub for culture and innovation. The city’s hotels and major attractions are reporting strong bookings and are preparing to welcome visitors from across Australia and the world who will travel to Sydney to be a part of this incredible annual event. It’s the combination of light, music and ideas that makes Vivid Sydney a completely unique experience. Visitors should plan to stay in Sydney and surrounds to enjoy a jam-packed schedule of daytime Ideas talks, seminars and forums combined with night time tours of the light installations and evening music performances,” she said.

Vivid Light will see the city illuminated into a dazzling playground of fun and free sights for all ages. New precincts at Taronga Zoo, The Galeries and the harbourside of the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney will join returning favourites at Circular Quay, Darling Harbour and the Australian Maritime Museum, Martin Place, Central Park and Chatswood.

According to Vivid Sydney Creative Director, Ignatius Jones, the next four weeks are a time of intense creativity and construction for light artists. He says “Vivid Sydney takes art off the walls and literally puts it on the street. You cannot underestimate the complexity of creating touchable, durable outdoor light art. Artists are working intensely, often developing new technologies to bring their vision to life.”

Over the next two weeks, Vivid Sydney’s artistic and technical teams will be busy preparing for the incredible lights-on moment at 6pm on Friday 27 May. Up to 1,480m of LED tape will be installed to light up Sydney Harbour Ferries as they journey across the Harbour. Approximately 1600 LED tubes, containing 76,800 individual LEDs, and 140 High Output LED Cans will be laid so visitors can literally control the colour of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, as part of the Dress Circle installation at Circular Quay.

Light artists Ruth McDermott and Ben Baxter have exhibited at every Vivid Sydney since the festival began in 2009. In the coming weeks, they will be installing lighting by boat under Walsh Bay’s Piers 2/3 to bring to life the Underwater Forest, a light work that pays homage to the massive turpentine tree trunks which support the heritage pier.

Wunderkind designers, Thomas Martin and Sebastian Barkoczy, will be fitting thousands of clear light tubes to build U-Tube, a frame in which guests can imprint their palm or body. Martin and Barkoczy are well known for their popular Robtoanic installation which was a hit in Martin Place during Vivid Sydney 2015.

At the McGrath Foundation, almost 3,000 Australians have submitted images of those touched by breast cancer to create the inspirational McGrath Foundation Mosaic installation. Images will be projected on the AMP ‘Sydney Cove’ Building at Circular Quay to form a mosaic tribute to Jane McGrath who inspired a nation, and whose legacy via the McGrath Foundation continues to support families across Australia experiencing breast cancer through its McGrath Breast Care Nurses.

Artists Justinus Hartany, Sean Virili, Matthew Fungs and Jamie Bastiol are collecting 1,200 PET bottles to fill with 120 litres of tonic water. Quinine in the tonic will glow under UV light to create Tectonic, a playful installation suspended above visitor heads in Kendall Lane.

Mr Jones points out that these initiatives are just a small part of the overall efforts undertaken by artists to create the most original and exciting Vivid Sydney festival yet.

“Every year artists outdo themselves to create new art works, use new technologies and engage with audiences in new ways. Vivid Sydney is never the same, it is always evolving to provide fresh experiences to visitors annually,” he says.

Tickets to Vivid Sydney’s Vivid Music and Vivid Ideas events are also selling fast. Limited tickets remain for Vivid Ideas’ Game Changer talk series featuring filmmaker Spike Jonze, House of Cards creator Beau Willimon, Orange is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan, and fashion creative director, Margaret Zhang. While demand is high for Vivid Music events such as New Order and Anohni at the Sydney Opera House, Models, Machinations and Dave Mason reunion event at the Enmore theatre, and art-meets-music dance party Curve Ball at Carriageworks.

The 4th edition of CHART ART FAIR is the most ambitious to date, with an expanded gallery list, the introduction of CHART DESIGN, and an extensive programme of talks and events.

CHART ART FAIR, the leading Nordic contemporary art fair, returns to The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen for its fourth edition from August 26 – 28, 2016. Since its inception, CHART has established itself as the international platform for contemporary art in the region.

CHART breaks with the traditional fair format by carefully curating the galleries’ artwork and presenting everything in unison as an exhibition, in the halls of Kunsthal Charlottenborg. The selection and curation is realised by the five founding galleries based in Copenhagen: Galleri Susanne Ottesen, Galleri Bo Bjerggaard, V1 Gallery, Andersen’s Contemporary and David Risley Gallery.

This year 28 of the leading galleries from the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden) and 2 galleries based outside of the Nordic region, but originating from Copenhagen and Helsinki, have been invited to participate in the fair. The CHART ART FAIR talks programme will be curated and moderated by Mark Rappolt, editor- in-chief, ArtReview. The programme will bring together leading individuals from the Nordic and international art world. The CHART TALKS local media partner is Danish daily newspaper, Politiken. Further details will be announced in June 2016.

CHART SOCIAL

CHART SOCIAL is a series of cultural events exploring the crossover between art, design, architecture, music, performance, and gastronomy, which will run for the duration of the fair, with events taking place at both Kunsthal Charlottenborg and in various other locations around the city. This year CHART is pleased to work with both private and public institutions, including the municipality of Copenhagen, to facilitate the CHART SOCIAL program, which is free of charge and open to the public.

CHART ARCHITECTURE

Each year students from leading Nordic architecture schools are invited to enter the CHART ARCHITECTURE competition. This year 6 finalists have been selected to design individual

pavilions for the Kunsthal Charlottenborg courtyard to house the fair’s restaurants and cultural partners. During the fair, a winning pavilion will be selected.

The students’ submissions are judged by a committee including: Bjarke Ingels, architect and founder of BIG; Kristoffer Lindhardt Weiss, philosopher; Tom Emerson, architect and founder of 6a architects; Dorte Foss, architect; and Jamiee Williams, architect and artistic manager at CHART.

CHART ART FAIR was established in 2013 by Gallery Susanne Ottesen, Galleri Bo Bjerggard, V1 Gallery, Andersen’s Contemporary, and David Risley Gallery, with the ambition to challenge the boundaries and experience of a traditional art fair, furthermore, the ambition was and still is to further develop the impact and role of a Nordic art event on the international art and cultural scene. More than 1000 international guests and art professionals visited CHART ART FAIR 2015, which welcomed more than 13.000 visitors in total. For the opening concert, over 6.500 Copenhageners came to the courtyard of Kunsthal Charlottenborg. CHART was nominated for several prizes, including the IBYEN prize and AOK.dk Byens Bedste as “Art Experience of The Year”. Main contributors and key partners are Københavns Kommune, Montana, Altan.dk, Absolut, HAY, FOSS, L’Esprit du Vin.

Jazz Market by The Sea, a three-day cultural festival, returns for its 6th year. The Market concept is inspired by the traditional ‘pasar seni’ in Bali, where the local community comes together in a colourful market environment, full of hustle and bustle and bargain opportunities. On both Friday and Saturday you will be able to participate in a batik workshop to enrich your knowledge of Indonesian heritage. Each day, there will be textile showcases from Jogjakarta, Solo, Jepara, Banyuwangi and Bali, at the Kain Pavilion in Joglo Agung. The main stage will open at 5pm featuring school performances with a cultural parade. With an “Indie” take for the day, you will see some Indie talents such as Angga 432 with their blues influences, British pop inspired band – Zat Kimia, White shoes & The Couple Company, and Dialog Dini Hari.

Saturday will see a Jamu making workshop, while a fashion show at the Kain Pavilion in Joglo Agung, will feature modern batik styles. A theatrical performance “wayang manusia” will be shown by the dramatic Institute Seni Indonesia (ISI) Bali and Jogjakarta. Up and coming talents Fendy Trio, Sound of Mine and 4units will be on stage and the one and only KLA Project will close out the night.

The waves of world-class entertainment and overflowing star power from Studio City are splashing all over Macau. The first party of “Summer Love” is scheduled for Saturday, June 11, and will feature fashion and media icon Paris Hilton behind the turntable. Arsenal Tour Dates Announced

The NSW Government and English football club Arsenal have announced the match dates for the London club’s Sydney tour, with two games in July 2017 to attract local and international fans of the Premier League giants.

Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres said the Gunners will be playing Sydney FC on Thursday 13 July 2017, and the Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday 15 July 2017.

“Football fans around Australia and the world can get these dates in their diary, and book their trip to Sydney for two blockbuster matches,” Mr Ayres said.

“The atmosphere will be electric with Arsenal bringing their first team squad to go head-to-head with our two top sides.

“We can’t wait to welcome Arsenal to our shores in just over 12 months’ time for the two matches – which are expected to attract more than 28,000 domestic and international visitors to NSW, with a total visitor spend of $18.6 million.

“Tickets to the games at ANZ Stadium will go on sale on 19 July 2016, and I encourage all sports fans to come to Sydney and enjoy our great State.

“The Arsenal tour is a great partnership with the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, and has been secured exclusively for Sydney,” Mr Ayres said.

Arsenal Chief Executive Officer Ivan Gazidis said the Club was looking forward to the matches.

“Our pre-season matches enable the squad to complete final preparations ahead of a new campaign, and Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers will provide a strong test for the team,” Mr Gazidis said.

“The trip also gives our travelling squad a wonderful opportunity to see our loyal supporters in a country so passionate about football; it’s set to be a truly special trip and everyone at Arsenal Football Club is already looking forward to it.”
