Ascending the staircase within Aesop’s Fashion Walk store, Hong Kong, the visitor reaches an atmospheric antechamber where they can await their scheduled—and perhaps ardently anticipated—Facial Appointment. The quartet of rooms was created with longstanding collaborators MLKK Studio, elaborating on the ground-floor’s design intent, which prioritises material re-use and soft spatial qualities. These are interior environments of sensory respite and exploration, where Aesop’s formulations for the skin can be applied with the utmost care, in the utmost calm.
Vaulted ceilings throughout, hand-brushed with lime-based plaster, effect a celestial hush conducive to a restorative hour or so. Customers will have the opportunity to discuss any concerns or preferences with Aesop’s Facial Therapists in an intimate pre-consultation alcove, before entering the main chamber. Honouring their first design for Aesop in Fashion Walk, MLKK Studio salvaged copper from the previous store and, with a local metalsmith, re-fashioned it to create copper handles that accompany each guest and consultant through the sequence of rooms. The warmth of the re-used metal conveys the careful and generous approach taken each time a drawer is opened to fetch a pertinent product or important implement. Cork contributes to the muted acoustics—reining in the decibels of any chitter-chatter or pitter-patter to ensure the focus of the appointment is left undisturbed.
