A Night To Remember At Caper Bangkok

My partner and I were delighted to get a chance to reconnect with the exceptional dining at Caper here in Bangkok, having previously experienced Dan Bark’s culinary cooking alongside Tanjira “Fay” Tragoolvongse engaging hospitality at their original Soi Ekkamai location.

Now located off Sukhumvit Soi 71, time has not diminished the couple’s ability to create a relaxing evening to celebrate both dining and imbibing. From a modest modern style entrance with peephole portal window views into the lounge bar and fine dining of Cadence, we went onwards into the dining room as we started out with a medley of wonderful house special’s cocktails before, and during our meal.

The relaxed dining interior, feeling like a comfortable modern take on New York dining of the early 20’s, combined with attentive service made for an enjoyably casual meal. Starting off with the signature Truffle Toast and a helping of Uni-Toast both with a quick follow-on of Wagyu beef Dip still gave room for the main treats of Lamb Tenderloin and Seared Duck Breast. Both nicely cooked in the pink. The Seasonal Special of Crab Croquet Cake was also chosen to lift the meal.

Discussing with Chef Dan and Fay, our thoughts were that the translation of the Alaskan king crab with nasturtium, apple, and almond based crab cake had many flavours and textures competing together, with no strong winner.  While the other dishes were spot on in flavours and presentations, combining Asian and American-European nicely and retaining that originality Chef Dan is known for.

The location for some Bangkokians may seem a journey but seeing the consistency and explorations of this culinary couple is worth it. One can understand why the couple maintain a loyal following at this comfortably elegant Bangkok restaurant. The seasonally changing menu is a mix of inspirations from chef Dan’s favourite life moments gathered from Seoul, Chicago and Bangkok.
