Byredo Year of the Snake: Coming Home

For the Year of the Snake, Byredo celebrates the warmth of homecoming and reunion, a deep sense of belonging and the creative inspiration to be found at home through times spent together. The campaign takes the journey home with artist Wei Yijuan. Leaving her base in the thriving cosmopolitan hub of Xiamen, the painter and photographer reaches her family house in the Dongping mountains – a little utopia where she regularly hosts gatherings for friends as an escape from city life. Wei has partnered with Byredo to create an exclusive motif for the Year of the Snake, drawing inspiration from the natural world’s fluid, organic forms. Photographed by Annie Lai, a close friend of Wei and fellow native of Fujian, the campaign artfully intertwines botanical elements with the sinuous lines of the snake, symbolising renewal and interconnectedness.

An unaffected sense of familiarity and comfort envelops the New Year collaboration. Since childhood, this has been a joyful time of year for the artist, a moment to gather with loved ones and strengthen connections that are eternal and unchanging.

“My father once said, ‘we are people with roots, we grow and branch outwards like a giant tree but we remain embedded in our hometown, a reminder for the next generation of where we come from.’ Every gathering with my family is an exploration and excavation of these roots, through this I feel the connections that bind us together.” Wei Yijuan, artist.

As her place of retreat and creative reset, Wei’s studio in her family home is where she imagined this year’s festive motif for Byredo. Applying her unique artistic language to the Year of the Snake, she was inspired by sinuous curves that wind around flowers and plants, entwined and blossoming together.

“My paintings often use floating lines and bright colours to convey ideas of vitality. I see many lines of resemblance in the world, like the roots of a tree, the bends of a river or even blood vessels within the body. This universality is what I want to portray. ”Wei Yijuan, artist.

Through a series of images lensed by Wei’s friend and photographer Annie Lai, the campaign captures the joy of coming together as she assembles her community for celebrations. Born in New Zealand, based in London but similarly with roots in Fujian, Lai’s work is known for its thought-provoking explorations of identity and belonging.

Intimate snapshots document a natural chemistry between the nurturing of creativity, family bonds and festive traditions. Time spent in the kitchen cooking with family. Vibrant paper lanterns decorating the roof. Sparklers shared between family and friends that light up the night in anticipation of tomorrow. A time of renewal where the old becomes new in the space of one day.
