The Langham, Hong Kong Partners with Celebrated Bake Shop “Butter” for a British-Meets-American Afternoon Tea

This September, The Langham, Hong Kong and Hong Kong’s favourite cake shop Butter partner for an elegantly playful Afternoon Tea fusing the best of British and American culinary traditions. From 2 September to 30 October, the new Afternoon Tea menu at the iconic luxury hotel celebrates Butter’s all-American style and the legendary British heritage of The Langham brand.

Set in the refined surrounds of Palm Court – styled after its namesake at The Langham, London, where Afternoon Tea has been served since 1865 – the new menu offers a creative take on favourites from both sides of the Atlantic. Four savoury and four sweet bites showcase classic ingredients and dishes, infused with a sense of joyful whimsy.

Part of the renowned hospitality group Black Sheep Restaurants, Butter is Hong Kong’s most celebrated cake shop and a landmark destination for classic American diner desserts. Headed up by Executive Pastry Chef Karys Plaxe, the little bake shop that has gained a cult following for its deliciously indulgent and nostalgic home-baked cakes and desserts. Karys is known for her meticulous approach and creative finesse, crafting innovative confectionaries with a playful twist.

Karys joins forces with The Langham, Hong Kong’s acclaimed Pastry Chef Tin Lai to create the hotel’s new Afternoon Tea menu. Renowned for his experimental style and use of exotic ingredients, Tin takes guests on a flavourful journey in the hotel’s celebrated Afternoon Tea experience.

Drawing on much-loved British and American traditions, Tin and Karys have each created two sweet and two savoury delicacies for the new Afternoon Tea. Butter’s homage to the United States comes in the form of a Mini Vegetable Pot Pie with Butter’s classic pie crust, and a Roasted Mushroom Sandwich with herbed cream cheese and wilted kale. Sweet treats are Butter’s signature Red Velvet Cake with cream cheese frosting, and America’s best-loved dessert, Apple Pie with salted caramel financier, apple compote and caramelised pastry tuile.

Chef Tin’s savoury contributions take inspiration from the British sandwich tradition, featuring delicate Lobster Sandwich with mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato, and Corned Beef Burger with sauerkraut, cheddar cheese and honey mustard. His sweet delicacies pay homage to Britain’s favourite desserts, with a Chocolate Fudge Cake with rosemary apricot jam and Pistachio & Strawberry with pistachio mousse, strawberry cream and coulis.

Rounding out the delicious Afternoon Tea menu, guests will also receive a special bounce-back card from Butter^, allowing them to enjoy a complimentary cookie at the flagship bakery on Staunton Street, Soho and at the Butter Cookies truck at Pacific Place.

The “Butter” Afternoon Tea will be available at Palm Court, The Langham Hong Kong from 2 September to 31 October, 2024. Afternoon Tea is available on weekdays from 3:00 to 5:30p.m., and on weekends and public holidays in two sittings, from 2:15p.m. to 4:15p.m., and 4:30p.m. to 6:30p.m. Priced at HK$738* for two on weekdays; or HK$768* for two on weekends.
