Zolima CityMag’s New Book Available at M+ Alongside Henry Steiner Exhibition starting 15 June
Award-winning online magazine Zolima CityMag is launching the first print volume of its new Zolima Culture Guide with a deep dive into the work of Hong Kong’s father of graphic design: Henry Steiner. This year, Steiner celebrated his 90th birthday and the 60th anniversary of his graphic design firm, and a major new exhibition of his work will open at M+ museum on 15 June 2024. We are thrilled to announce that Zolima Culture Guide Vol 1: Henry Steiner’s Hong Kong will be open for public purchase alongside the inauguration of the exhibition. Our books will be available at the M+ bookstore.
On 15 June 2024, Billy Potts — one of the key writers of Henry Steiner’s Hong Kong, will also be interviewing Henry Steiner about his experience, how he shaped many iconic corporate identities of Hong Kong and what role does graphic design plays in communication. The foreword of Henry Steiner’s Hong Kong is written by Tina Pang, curator of the M+ exhibition Henry Steiner: The Art of Graphic Communication at M+.Henry Steiner’s Hong Kong marks a major milestone for Zolima CityMag, which is now expanding from digital to print with its new Zolima Culture Guide. After nine years as a leading authority on Hong Kong’s cultural, art and creative scene, Zolima’s creative team is expanding its efforts to include a series of books diving deep into everything that makes Hong Kong unique.
Over the last year, Zolima CityMag has been exploring how and what shaped Steiner’s projects through a series of 10 online articles. Henry Steiner’s Hong Kong expands that effort in a new collectible book. The publication explores Steiner’s vast body of work, examining how he crafted visual identities that have become ubiquitous, including those for HSBC and the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Readers will gain a deeper understanding of how Steiner’s pioneering approach, blending Chinese and other Asian elements with Western design principles, not only captured the essence of Hong Kong’s “East meets West” spirit but also propelled the city onto the international stage.
In-depth coverage of more than 18 of Steiner’s projects explores how the designer has shaped the city since his arrival in 1961. Close looks at HSBC, Dairy Farm, Wellcome, the Peak Tower, Ocean Terminal and many more reveal how Steiner created graphic identities, banknotes and other documents that still influence Hong Kong and the world today. These projects didn’t just mirror Hong Kong’s evolution from a colonial outpost to a global financial powerhouse, they set the stage for it.
